An Island For All: KurStube and DiverseBude
“All” stands for equality among human beings and other inhabitants on the island of Borkum; inclusivity for residents, visitors, and seasonal workers; and timelessness that bridges the past, present, and future.
Our project’s subtitle, "KurStube and DiverseBude" embodies the spatial characteristics we envision. "KurStube" reflects our commitment to providing a serene and rejuvenating environment reminiscent of traditional spa and wellness settings. Simultaneously, "DiverseBude" emphasizes our mission to offer a diverse range of experiences, activities, and services, making it a gathering hub for people of all backgrounds. Together, "KurStube and DiverseBude" blend of tradition and innovation, inviting visitors to unwind, rejuvenate, and participate in a thriving community experience. Our project aims to be a welcoming and versatile destination that appeals to diverse audiences seeking relaxation, health, and a sense of belonging.
The Island as a living room
Strategy 1. Embrace Nature: Our approach goes beyond preserving the existing landscapes on the site; we also seek to extend the blue and green infrastructure wherever possible. Our goal is to weave a harmonious texture of nature and the built environment, bringing nature closer to people's daily lives. For instance, we plan to replace the outdated and insufficient cultural island with a multi-functional water pond.
Strategy 2. Improve Connectivity: Enhancing connectivity is vital to creating a cohesive urban fabric. In our design, we have completed the street network and introduced pleasant public spaces. Additionally, strategic placement of public facilities like bike rental stations, kiosks, and cafes can increase walkability and accessibility, encouraging more walking and cycling.
Strategy 3. Design for Multi-functionality: Instead of segregating different functionalities, we adopt a smart and flexible design approach that combines various elements harmoniously. A prime example is our new cultural centre in the southern project site. Nestled in the former tennis court area, it seamlessly transitions from the urban zone in the north to the natural landscape in the south. This dynamic centre houses the tourist info centre, the national park centre, an event hall, and a library, all under one roof. Architecturally, we have ensured that these spaces can function independently as pavilions, offering versatility for different activities and events.
